world youth day 2005

A Pilgrimage to
WORLD YOUTH DAY 2005
11 Days including WYD 2005 + Heidelberg Area

Dom Entrance

We have designed this tour for groups, who do not have enough time for a longer journey, or those who are on a comparatively tight budget. It can be shortened further to a rock bottom stay in “Cologne Only”, although the sights scheduled to be visited during the first two days are truly unique and meaningful additions to this pilgrimage.

This 11 day tour includes excursions to cathedrals and castles such as Speyer Cathedral, inaugurated in 1061 as the biggest and most spectacular churches of its time as well as the great cathedrals at Worms and Mainz. Our experienced tour guides, will help you and your youth group reflect on the beauty, tradition and faith of this historical area.

Cologne and Heidelberg ...

Speyer Cathedral

Heidelberg and Cologne both have long histories where Catholicism has played major roles.

The name Heidelberg is derived from the German word Heiligenberg which means "Holy Mount". Lorsch Monastery was erected in the year 764. In 863 and 1130, the monasteries of St. Michael and Neuberg Monastery were founded respectively. The Bishop of Worms founded Schoenau Monastery therein 1142. From these religious roots at the foot of a Worms castle, Heidelberg developed and prospered.

The Archbishopric of Cologne was founded in 785 soon become one of the most influencial cities in the Holy Roman Empire.

Dom Cathedral Glass Window

Cologne was the fourth city in after Jerusalem, Byzantium and Rome to bear the designation "Sancta" (holy) in the city name: "Holy Cologne, faithful daughter of the Roman church by the grace of God". In 1164, Rainald von Dassel, Imperial Chancellor and Archbishop of Cologne, brought the relics of the Three Kings to Cologne.A mighty cathedral, "the Dom" was to erected as a burial church in their honour.

In addition to the world famous Dom, twelve large Roman collegiate and monastery churches, stand as a major architectural testimony to the "spiritual" influence on this area.

These two cities stand as foundation stones of the faith.
